In the News
As September approaches, so does the season for National Hunt racing. We’ve had a couple of runners over the summer, but mainly we’ve been preparing for winter. The facilities are coming along nicely and we’re hoping that everything is bang on schedule for the season to get going properly. The summer jumps are all right, but even during the heights of summer, the National Hunt boys are already planning and anticipating shorter days and lower temperatures for their favourites to return to the fray.
We’ve also got a new addition to the yard in the form of Alamein. Formerly with Mouse Morris in the colours of Gigginstown, he’s a lovely seven year old gelding by Beneficial and hopefully we can sweeten him up. He’s won a bumper, a maiden hurdle and a class one beginners chase, so he’s no slouch for sure. His best form seems to have been on softer ground, so hopefully we can find him a couple of nice races to run in once the rain starts to come.
Last week’s runners
Surf and Turf ran with credit in the two mile four handicap chase at Southwell. Under a good ride from Jamie Bargary, our veteran chaser jumped well all the way around. He tracked the leaders in the early stages, before being briefly outpaced on the way to the home turn, where he lost his position momentarily. But he stayed on to finish fourth, albeit well beaten by the front two. But it’s a bit more money for the prize pot and we’ll take that.
This week’s runners
Surf and Turf has two entries this week, firstly at Stratford on Saturday over two mile six and also at Perth on Monday over two mile four. Both races are over fences and although Perth is probably a better trip for him, he’d also be in a stronger field and running out of handicap (just) if top weight Hammersly Lake were to turn up. Stratford would be new territory trip wise, but the field might not be as strong for that race and he stayed on well enough the last day to try him over slightly further for the first time. He’s declared for Stratford on Saturday, with Jamie Bargary set to take the ride and we’re hoping he can do himself proud.
